New theme – pBlog revival

Finally got around to create a semi-new theme for my blog. This time it’s a bit more personal as it’s a revival of an old theme I used for my previously created blogengine called pBlog. It’s still in process of being converted to WordPress, so still bits and pieces that doesn’t look all that good. Atleast it’s a start to make the blog my own little place..

Just wanted to write a small notice that I got plenty of responses on my Beta request. Thank you all for applying however I got all beta testers I need now. Real life have taken some time again, but I should be able to get a beta out to the testers around next week.

I also noticed that the Gallery2 integration project is going forward as well. If you want to look it up, point your browsers to http://wpg2.ozgreg.com/. I will continue develope patGal as I decided not to use Gallery2 for my site.

Okay, I think I’m about to get my gallery to a point where it’s ready to be used. Alot of features is still missing, but the base is ready and need to be tested. Since no documentation has been written yet, I would like to test it with a selected group first.

This is also my first “opensource” project, just written in my work and to friends and families. This means I never acctually had the sourcecode out for anyone to view and judge me by. This is also the reason I want to conduct this little “closed beta” first.

So, if you have some time over and willing to write some feedback/report bugs on the tests, please use the contact form to contact me. It would be a plus if you used a windowsserver to conduct the tests and if you have some PHP knowledge, but it’s not a must. I rather see some feedback and ideas being posted in return.

Administration of patGal

So, I think I got most of the basics of patGal ready, but the most important functions still remains to do; The upload part. So far I’ve came up with two ideas for this, either in wp-admin or directly in the gallery (once logged in). Both has it’s benefits, so to me this is a hard choice. Either way it will have some options in wp-admin for settings like paths, thumbsettings and also design. Please use comments in this post or the contact page to send me personally.

Even thou I didn’t get it in for the contest, the project is still alive. However I have been thinking abit about it and I will add a functionality I haven’t seen in a webgallery yet. However the feature I am talking about is taking over pretty much all photoorganizers on the market. What I’m talking about is tags instead of categories.

This means you can add a picture with multiple tags to get better searching options as well as a nicer structure. I’m aware that some users only want categories and with this method they still can. They only have to add one tag to each picture and the gallery will work just as any gallery software out there. Only thing remaining is how I will build the structure. Maybe make it like a normal category based gallery, but make another “tag index” where you be more specific about what pictures you want. If you got any suggestions or ideas, you know what to do.

I finally decided to start my own gallery plugin for WordPress 1.5. To keep me motivated, I added this plugin to a contest. Deadline is within 2 months, but I allready got some stuff working. Once it’s done, it’s gonna need some extended testing as well as tuning and making the code a bit more readable.

I got some experience in making galleries, so I doubt it will be any issues there. More afraid of the integration with wordpress since it’s using it’s own Plugin API. Will hopefully learn something out of this project and maybe get some inspiration to do more plugins. I still got some nifty and cool ideas to complete.

As you can see in the topmenu, I am trying to setup a gallery with the same design as this page. This is usually a simple task, but since both these systems are new to me it’s gonna take a little while before everything is running as it should. Feel free to look around, but I am pretty sure it’s full of broken links right now.

I also added a contact form. Found this neat plugin where I just enter a simple command to create a contact form. Works flawless so far, but we’ll see what happends.

Also had the luck to find myself a new theme. This is theme is free and I think the author of it gives his blessing to modifications. This is what I will do, but I do not have the right tools and time right now. I will be running this a while and you can expect the transformation happening in the future.
